Abstract [en]
Earlier research show that various ballsports dominate in physical education and the physical education and health (PEH) is shaped by the organized club sports. An interesting question is if students, who once have rejected, or never have been attracted, to organized club sports are motivated to participate in PHE? Through a qualitative approach this was investigated. Ten students were interviewed to gain an understanding of the individual student’s motivation for physical education. The starting point was the experiences of non-club sports students of PHE and what previous experience they have of physical activity. The composition is based on Deci and Ryans (2000) Self-determination Theory, in which the three basic psychological needs, belonging, competence, and autonomy, all of equal importance for the individual's motivation and well-being is discussed. The results show that non club sports students were low in motivation or amotiveted to PHE, which meets the needs of students not belonging and autonomy. Some of the students perceived that the needs for competence are met. This could be related to that some previously had been active in clubs. The physical education similar to the organized club sports created consequences of physical inactivity for a group of students. An increased awareness from the PE teacher of the inactive student’s perception and experience, of physical activity would possibly contribute to intrinsic motivation and well-being, taking into account the individual’s biological, psychological, and social needs.
