A cohesive European identity: a survey of the EU project and its attempt to create a cohesive European identity

Abstract [en]

My purpose with this paper is to analyse the EU project and its attempt to create a cohesive European identity. The method used for achieving the purpose of the paper is both analytical and normative. The theoretical grounds for this paper are quite wide. I quote liberal philosophers as for example Taylor, Rawls, Berlin and Sandel, furthermore I use writers that deal with ethnicity as for example Geertz, Smith and Eriksen, and books that deals with EU-s power structure and institutions. I have done this in order to create tools for analysing the EU as a process of unification in the perspective of European Identity. The normative part of the paper is that EU should consider balanced power sharing on the ethnic basis. This I have done departing from the case of former Yugoslavia, and exemplified it with the EU- creation. One of the reasons why I relate Yugoslavia with EU is because Yugoslavia was a federations and EU is in a way to become one.
