GALILEO is a new Global Satellite Navigation System currently in development by members of the European Union. This is a sophisticated system that will introduce new requirements on the end-user receiver, requirements not met by current GPS or GLONASS receiver designs. With the implementation phase of GALILEO soon to begin, this thesis is intended to analyse the GALILEO BOC (2,2) Open Service signal with respect to receiver design and complexity. The work presented here is the very first step in a GALILEO receiver prototype design, where the ultimate goal is to develop a combined receiver for both GPS and GALILEO using a software defined radio (SDR) approach. This thesis focuses on the basic signal processing required to use the GALILEO Open Service signal and the work presented includes a GALILEO BOC (2,2) signal generator, an analysis of the signal properties, and techniques for a receiver to detect (acquire) and accurately track this signal. It is shown that most of the acquisition and tracking techniques used for the GPS C/A signal are also applicable for the GALILEO BOC(2,2) signal. However, the GALILEO signal is much more demanding in terms of receiver complexity and processing power, with longer codes and larger signal bandwidth. The primary differences lie in the code structure and data modulation rate, which affect the correlation procedure and hence the design of code and carrier loop discriminators.
