Abstract [en]

Fasthosts Internet Ltd is a web hosting company that hosts domains on NT servers. As their clientele grows they have been forced to expand their technical support to cover the increasing demand for assistance. A complement to their technical support would be an automated web based help system that could help customers solving problems without the participation of a human. The objectives of this project are to see if it isjustified to design the automated help system as an expert system and, if so, suggest a design of such a system. The objectives also include testing of that expert system to see if it satisfies the requirement of such a system. The result is a system designed as an ActiveX component, which is run within an Internet Explorer window. The inference engine used is an ActiveX version of a CLIPS engine hence the programming language used to implement the knowledge base and processing rules is CLIPS. Most of the work has been designing the processing rules and knowledge base of the expert system. Testing proved that the expert system cannot perform as well as the human expert even though it is one of the characteristics of expert systems (it manages to solve approximately 4 problems out of 5). But considering the amount of time spent on building and verifying the knowledge base it cannot be expected to outperform the human expert. Since the system is designed as an ActiveX component, the availability is restricted to those who use Microsoft Internet Explorer. A future design of the system should be a browser independent solution.
