Odour-control by preventing formation of volatile fatty acids

Abstract [en]

The report describes the odour-problem that VFAs (Volatile Fatty Acids) can cause in a paper mill. The purpose with the work was to find out exactly where in the process the growth of the VFAs is and how to prevent it. During a period, daily measurements were carried out in order to get an idea of the normal levels of VFAs. To obtain an overview of the system, block diagrams and mass balances for every paper machine were made. Acidification experiments in lab-scale, where the mill conditions were simulated, were performed to see which parameters that are important. Some products for prevention of acidification, from different chemical suppliers, were tested in labscale. Conclusions are that chemicals alone cannot solve the problem. It seems as the process must be modified and the housekeeping has to improve.
