Abstract [en]
There is not a gender-equal division of parental leave in Sweden, women used 75 percent of parental leave days and men used 25 percent in 2013. Previous research has shown that economy, labor, breastfeeding and gender are dominant motives behind the division of parental benefit days in Sweden. It has also been shown that gender is an important reason to how parents divided the days between them. This study is based on four interviews with women talking about parental leave and maternity and the study investigates 1) how the women through their stories justify their division of parental leave and 2) how the woman contributes to doing gender through their stories. The results of this study shows the main five motives behind the chosen division of parental leave, they are work, finances, breastfeeding, I want to be at home and gender equality. All the motives connect indirectly to gender identity thus gender appears as an important factor when it comes to the division of parental benefit days between the interviewed women and their children's father. The interviewed women presented biological and natural differences between them and the fathers, which makes them the child's primary care provider.
