Abstract [en]

There are studies that examine how long working hours affect patient safety and staff health, however, none of these were made in a prehospital enviroment, where there are opportunities for recovery between the missions of the ambulance. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of sleepiness during the work shifts of nurses working within the ambulance service. A web-based questionnaire which ambulance care nurses voluntarily participated in. The questionnaire was sent to 13 ambulance station in two different county councils. The questionnaire had been designed by the authors. The result was presented with descriptive statistics and content analysis. In total 53 nurses responded, 12% of questionnaires handed out. The results show that there are individuals who experiences sleepiness which affected medical assessments and treatments (15.0%), nursing (24.5%), treatment (35.8%) and patient (16.9%). These people worked different models of shifts. A low response rate meant that no correlated analysis could be made between incidence of tiredness and the different work schedules. Our study shows that sleepiness during work shifts of nurses in ambulance care exist. This sleepiness experienced by some respondents to affect the reception, care and patient safety. Further studies in this area are needed to investigate how extensive the problem of sleepiness during the work shift in prehospital care is.
