Tolkning av responsmätningar på teststräckorna på E45 vid Svappavaara
2016 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

In 2012 four test road sections were built, outside Svappavaara on the E45, with varying superstructure. The main reason was the new ore deposit that was opened in Kaunisvaara the same year. Since the operator wanted to transport the ore by truck to Svappavaara where it would be transferred to rail, it needed extensive reinforcement work on the road. The mine operator had also obtained permission to use vehicles with a total weight of 90 tonnes instead of 60 tonnes, which is normally the maximum weight for roads with classification BK1. Thus arose a unique opportunity to examine the response to the four test road sections under heavy load in a cold climate with seasonal variations. The test section is equipped with stress and strain sensors that will measure when the mining vehicles pass by. There are also climate sensors which will continuously collect information about water and temperature conditions. In addition to measuring the response in the way of passing mining vehicles, falling weight deflectometer measurements have been carried out during 2013, 2014 and 2015. Falling weight deflectometer is a device which charges the surface with a dynamic load which simulates a vehicle passing by. In the apparatus there are also sensors deployed on fixed distance from the impact point, which records the deflection resulting from the load pulse. The purpose of this study was to compile, analyse, and evaluate response measurements, so that a comparison in performance could be made between the sections. Furthermore, predicting the state of development regarding rut depth and fatigue damage. Response analysis was done by backcalculating the elastic moduli in a linear-elastic manner with EVERCALC and in a nonlinear elastic manner with ERAPAVE. Using ERAPAVE and the produced elasticity modules theoretical stresses and strains could be calculated. The theoretical stresses and strains was compared to the actual ones measured in the road structure, indicating of the reasonableness of the elastic moduli. The conclusion is that the section with the best bearing capacity is the third one, it has the largest stiffness modulus of the asphalt and lowest stress at 30 cm and 60 cm depth. Section three have also been predicted with the longest life expectancy, 25 years prior to fatigue cracks reaches the surface and rut depth is 6.76 mm after 10 years.
