Varför ska jag använda hjälm?: Anställdas attityder till personlig skyddsutrustning och riskanalys-/tillbudsrapportering på ett energibolag

Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to study what attitudes the staff of an electric power company have towards the use of personal protective equipment, incident reporting, risk assessments/checklists to be performed, and what the staff think about the company’s safety work. In the thesis the answers of the following questions were sought: What attitudes does the staff have towards incident reporting? What attitudes does the staff have towards risk assessment/checklists to be performed? What does the staff think about the safety work that is conducted? Twentytwo interviews were conducted with subordinates, supervisor, and managers at the company. The interviews were semi-structured and conducted at the company. The results show negligence with some equipment such as helmets. Helmets should, according to the company’s regulations, be used at the workplace, but it was a matter of self-assessments when a helmet should be used. Colleagues did not remind each other if someone did not use the helmet. Risk analysis systems were described as difficult to apply on the field. The respondents felt that incident reporting was "drivel", but at the same time they felt "embarrassed" to admit mistakes committed. Regarding the use of personal protective equipment, it was concluded that the company needs to work to get a unitary use and by developing more specific guidelines with the help of a user group it may result in increased usage of helmets. It is important that all people know the difference between incidents and accidents. With information and justification why risks and incidents should be reported, the staff might gain an understanding of the reporting systems. Keywords: safety, safety culture, personal protective equipment, risk analysis, incident
