Funktionsblandning och tillgänglighet: Möjligheter vid stadsutveckling i Västerås

Abstract [en]

Since the 1980’s, the approach to land use planning of cities has turned from the earlier zoning approach to mixed-use areas. This is since mixed-use promotes pedestrians and cyclists, increasing the social climate on the street and decreases the stress of the envi- ronment. But even if the urban space and form, in the plan, is adapted to support mixed- use, the outcome is not always a mixed-use city. Today the planning field has realized that instead of planning mixed-use, the fundamental conditions that supports mixed-use must be planned. To facilitate this planning, tools and analysis that can measure the de- gree and type of mixed-use that a plan has potential for, must be developed. In the con- text of the urban planning project 3B in Västerås an opportunity was opened to immerse in the mixed-use field and the fundamental conditions that promotes a mixed-use city. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the integra- tion of use and spatial integration in the existing built environment. If connections can be found, they should be able to explain how the different uses will be distributed in a city. To find these connections, an inventory of existing uses in a study area in Västerås was performed. The inventory was then compared with space syntax and its integration analysis.Through the study, it was shown how the uses commercial activities, housings and workplaces were distributed to different spatial conditions in the city. The results were applied to project 3B ‘s plans for a new station area in Västerås and its five differ- ent layout options. In the application, the potential use distribution for the area, and its five options, was demonstrated. The conclusion is that it is possible to see connections between the integration of uses and spatial integration in the built environment. With these relationships, it is pos- sible to assess in advance the distribution of landuse in a city. It is, however, not until the station area is fully developed, that there is a chance to examine whether the applica- tion is consistent with the actual result.
