The effect of silicon in P/M materials

Abstract [en]

The effect of silicon in different iron base powders were investigated. The silicon was introduced as FeSi with two different particle sizes and SiC with one particle size. The mechanical properties of these materials: green density, sintered density, dimnesional change, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and impact enegry were investigated as well as metallographic properties such as grain size, structure, phases and pore structure, shape and size. The mechanical properties of the FeSi-materials were low and the metallographic showed undeveloped sintering necks as well as silicon rich areas. This means that the silicon has not diffused into the materials as desired. The mechanical properties of the SiC- materials were higher than the FeSi- materials. The metallography of these materials showed well developed sintering necks and no areas rich in silicon.
