Preventative maintenance program for Gerard Industries: design and implementation
2001 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This report describes how a maintenance program was selected for Gerard Industries and how this program is used to design and implement Preventative Maintenance (PM) programs for different machines. This includes information how one should strategically review a machine, important issues to look at to identify suitable PM and how to divide the maintenance responsibilities between involved workers. To be able to create a PM program an understanding of the company and how it works with maintenance had to be gained, as well as a thorough review of current literature. The method, to design and implement a PM program, starts by using a Cause and Effect Diagram to determine the most important areas to look at in term of improving efficiency. These areas are analysed in detail and as a result, recommendations for improvements are given. The Machine area, which is always analysed as maintenance is the scope of this project, is analysed by using a Pareto Downtime Analysis. The result is further used in a PM decision model and the output from this is recommended as the most suitable PM. These recommendations, together with recommendations from involved personnel, machine manuals and ourselves, are used to make PM instructions for machines. These PM instructions include inspections and lubrication point and has been validated by involved personnel, approved by the quality department and documented, as well as posted on the machines. There are separate instructions for the operators, setters and Maintenance Department and these instructions are scheduled from a daily basis up to a five-year basis. This report will serve as a guideline as well as an educational purpose for future implementations of PM programs at Gerard Industries.
