SIP based text conversation: real-time text conversation in a total conversation environment using RTP and RFC2793 packetization

Abstract [en]

Multimedia communication today consists mainly of video and audio transmissions. Hard of hearing computer users would have benefits of this technology in their everyday life if real-time text communication were added. For this purpose, Gunnar Hellström at Omnitor AB developed Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) Payload Type for Text Conversation (RFC2793). However, developers around the world have not yet included RFC2793 in their multimedia clients. This report describes a project, which will help disseminating RFC2793. An open source RFC2793 plug-in for Java Media Framework (JMF) has been created in order to help developers include RFC2793 in their clients. The plug-in has also been implemented in a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based multimedia client for demonstration purposes. The implementation will help disseminating RFC2793, and in the long-term help the hard of hearing in their everyday life.
