Application development environment for AS/400 at Sandvik IS: an overview
2000 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

AB Sandvik Information Systems develops and maintains a system for customer order processing, inventory management and invoicing called 400-SOPIC. It is used by subsidiaries of Sandvik around the world. Today, 400-SOPIC is developed for the IBM AS/400 platform using the development tool Cool:2E. The aim of this thesis was to analyse alternative tools for the development of 400-SOPIC. Two tools have been studied in the analysis, Cool:Plex and VisualAge for Java. The goal included finding a method for incorporating these tools into the development environment, and to study what consequences the incorporation may result in. A part of the thesis was also to describe Cool:2E and to evaluate the option to continue to develop 400-SOPIC with Cool:2E. A number of properties for development tools were used for describing Cool:2E, Cool:Plex and VisualAge for Java. The application development processes of the tools also contributed to the descriptions. An analysis of the tools was conducted. The analysis compared the strengths and weaknesses of the tools as well as opportunities and threats for them. Continued development with Cool:2E as well as methods for incorporating Cool:Plex and VisualAge were discussed. The recommendation for Sandvik IS is to further analyse Cool:Plex. The main advantage of Cool:Plex is the possibility to automatically migrate the existing source code for the application from Cool:2E into Cool:Plex. This is the only option for deploying Cool:Plex for 400-SOPIC. Continuing to develop with Cool:2E is still an option if no suitable tool is found. The development could in all cases benefit from improved documentation and some modifications to the source code.
