Abstract [en]

The excavator has long been a tool to facilitate excavation work. But as part of a growing demand for construction services, the development of various attachments for excavators begun. Nowadays, it is possible to perform other operations than only digging with an excavator.Manually changing attachment on an excavator is very time-consuming and physically demanding. A work which in the long run is not time efficient since there are needs to change attachments many times during a working day. Therefore, the quick coupler was invented. A quick coupler is an equipment which is mounted on the excavators digging arm in order to facilitate and allow for quick interchanges of attachments. However, quick couplers have been the cause to many accidents and incidents, which is why this thesis has been written in collaboration with the equipment manufacturer SMP Parts AB. The aim of the work was to develop a quick coupler that is both safer and user friendlier than the current quick coupler, SMP S40.After extensive research and analysis of accidents and incidents, two problem areas regarding the design for existing quick couplers were identified. But all accidents and incidents can be related to human factors.Through the use of the User-Centered Design (UCD) process, combined with 3D printed concepts, the end-users have actively participated in user studies and evaluations. The end-user wishes together with requirements of industry standards and Skanska AB regulations have resulted in the development of a new quick coupler. A quick coupler that is not only safer and more user-friendly, but which could also be the basis for allowing a common problem regarding movement of attachments.
