An implementation of PPP over ethernet in an edge router

Abstract [en]

With the introduction of new high bandwidth demanding applications the old technologies end-users have used to connect to the Internet, most notably analogue modems, are too slow. During the last years, several different techniques for providing cheap high bandwidth connections have been developed, such as Internet via cable TV networks, satellite and even power line networks. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a very promising technique that provides high bandwidth access, and will be introduced to many customers in the near future. An area of much discussion among ADSL providers and in the ADSL forum is how a user should connect to the provider and what stack of protocol that should be used. In this thesis, several existing protocols for access to ADSL providers are presented and discussed. One protocol, PPP over Ethernet, is investigated and presented further. An implementation of PPP over Ethernet is also presented.
