Alimak Hek manufacture and sell, inter alia, rack and pinion elevators, liftsand hoists. Rack and pinion elevators differ from conventional wire hoisted lifts, by thatthey are lifted by electrically driven rotating gear pinions mountedon the car, running along a stationary gear rack mounted in the hoist way. Thismeans that the lifts are quick to assemble, capable of heavy lifting and arewell suited for industrial applications.Similar to other types of lifts, there are strict safety requirements.Amongst other safety equipment, the lifts must be equipped with an emergencycatching device, capable of slowing down, and stopping the lift in case of emergency.Alimak Hek's lifts are today equipped with emergency catching devices basedon a design originally developed during the seventies. With time new featureshave been added to keep up with current safety regulations, but upcoming requirementsmay not be integratable into the present design and may result in the needfor additional safety components. This is what Alimak Hek hopes to avoid by researching the possibility ofdeveloping a new catching device design. Their aspiration is to eliminate theneed for extra safety equipment to limit cost, but also to circumvent certainundesirable aspects of the present design. This is what this thesisaddresses.Alternative existing designs are studied, both within the field and in otherfields, the desired functions are evaluated and ranked according to importance.Five concepts, including the present catching device, are then evaluatedaccording to how well they fulfill these functions and the best concept is chosen for further evaluation and development.This concept theoretically meets the requestedrequirements as well as some of the most important desirable functions, such asallowing for remote resetting and preventing creep from landing. The concept isdimensioned according to the specifications of the heavies and fastest runninglift in Alimak Hek's product range, but can be adapted to fit smaller lifts. The concept has been modeled with ProEngineer and evaluated, both bycalculations and FEM-analysis with the software Ansys Structural.
