The volatility in European fossil fuel prices: the case of steam coal, heavy fuel and natural gas
2001 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to compare the price volatility between three fossil fuels used in electricity generation: natural gas, heavy fuel oil and steam coal. To be able to bring about the comparison between different kinds of units the relative price variance is applied in the calculations. The test shows that the price of oil fluctuates at a higher rate and more frequently than the other fossils. The volatility depends partly on the market structure of the fossil fuel. Even if the prices fluctuate at a moderate rate per quarter, in the end considerably amounts can be necessary to take into consideration for investors.
