Utveckling av en enhetlig förpackningsdesign för naturliga isprodukter
2014 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This dissertation concerns a masters thesis of developing a uniform packaging series with an accompanyingbroschure and conceptual web page. The thesis results were developed for ICEHOTEL Jukkasjärvi and thecompanys’ series of ice products which has been expanded by two new products during the project. Thepackaging series was set to express exclusivity, create a metaproduct around the products and be identifiablewith the company profile. Further regard was to be taken for environmental friendliness and sustainabilityfor the packaging series due to ICEHOTELs being a company that prides itself with its relation to nature. The background for the project was the fact that ICEHOTEL is reaching for a bigger market as they alreadyhave international contacts since the company has built ice bars around the world. This also means thatICEHOTEL has established transport methods for their products made of ice. The company however doesnot have any previous experience of selling their products to end customers in consumer environments suchas grocery stores, which is why a need for packaging for this purpose was evident.By beginning with a theoretical study of ICEHOTELs company profile and literature on fields such asproduct semantics and graphic design, the practical design work was then performed in an iterative process. Methods used were, among others, brainstorming, sketching, computer aided design as well asbenchmarking. The project results consist of a conceptual design for the packaging series where each package is made outof a two piece box (top and bottom) manufactured in the corrugated sheet board material ’microwell’. Thegraphic design meets the project goals of exclusivity, uniformity and environmental friendliness while beingin accordance with ICEHOTELs company profile. The packagings create a metaproduct around theproducts by telling the story behind the products which is about the Torne River and the unique origin ofthe ice which ICEHOTEL harvests every year. Modern technology such as QR codes and web design wasused to tie the concept together as a whole which goes beyond the physical in the store. In the final stagesof the project prototypes were made of the packagings for future reference and continued development.
