Alkali extraction of pentoses from hardwood chips: extraction, cooking and paper properties investigation

Abstract [en]

The task of this work was to extract hemicelluloses in a pretreatment step in order to increase the value of the whole papermaking process. The extracted hemicelluloses can then be further processed contributing to a supplement to the income and strengthen the market position for the mill. It is important that the paper quality is in the same range to keep the main income secure. The project was performed as cooperation between Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner, Kiram AB and LuleƄ University of Technology. The scope of the project was to extract hemicelluloses using dilute alkali, find a suitable region for optimal concentration in extracted liquids and run full lab scale trials producing pulp for further analysis. The experimental part involved pretreatment through extraction at different times, temperatures and alkali charge. The variables were varied in a range possible to achieve with present equipment at the plant. Extraction trials with large amounts of xylose, fulfilling the boundaries of production in existing equipment at the Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner mill were further investigated. The chips from those extraction trials were cooked, refined and turned into sheets of paper. The sheets were then tested and compared with a reference pulp made from the same wood chips.
