Abstract [en]

Packet routing and firewalling is getting more common as the Internet is getting more pervasive. Since these are comparatively CPU-intensive tasks, it is desirable to offload those from the main CPU of a computer if the computer should be used for other things than acting as a router and/or firewall. One approach to offloading routing and firewalling tasks from the main CPU of a server is to move those tasks onto a separate router/firewall card which can be attached to the server's system bus. This report outlines the design and implementation of a multi-CPU router/firewall PCI-card running NetBSD. The purpose of such a card is to integrate within a single enclosure both the server and the router/firewall for a small to medium-size network. The operating system used on the host system for this project is Linux.
