Abstract [en]

This paper is the result of a Master Thesis in the subject Industrial Design at Volvo Trucks in Umeå. It contains an overall interior design of the living area in a long haul truck cab, called Globetrotter. About 95% of the drivers are single drivers (Market Research and European Strategy department, 3P Product Planning, The FH Survey). One of Volvo´s new interior solutions for these long cabs is called the office/dinette. This interior contains two beds, two back seats and a table. The concept does not sell well. Using the existing office/dinette as a base, the task was to quickly and with cheap solutions effect the required modifications to provide a single driver concept with fewer design compromises. The aim was to find a solution as for how to make use of the space in the living area: the back of the cab. To structure the task, a method called “Systematic problem solving” was used. This method helps to analyse the problem and divide it into sub- problems using different theoretical tools. All ideas has been tested with each other continuously throughout the work to get a holistic solution, in which the different parts work well together. There has also been several user clinics. The ideas are based on a broad spectrum of interviews, partly from our own interviews with drivers and partly from interviews made in a parallel ongoing thesis in Gothenburg. Furthermore, information has been gathered from surveys made by Volvo and from material of a development work at Umeå Institute of Design, made for Volvo Trucks. The result is a space for eating, relaxing, reading, watching TV and doing minor paper work. The concept is module based and fits many of the accessories in Volvos long cabs. It is presented in full scale prototypes and includes the following parts: • A relaxed armchair with mobile cushions • A table that fits a folder or a plate and is made in two parts, one fixed and one foldable • A kitchenette module with storage for a micro wave oven, a refrigerator/freeze and storage compartments • New slides, containing gas springs, for the vertical adjustment of the bed
