Contrast calibration of liquid crystal displays using vision technique

Abstract [en]

This report deals with the obstacles that have to be overcome to be able to measure contrast with a vision system. The conclusion is that it is possible to use the vision system for contrast measurements. It is first shown, that the vision system has a linear response to illumination, and by using the introduced K-method also the contrast ratio display a linear behaviour. It is also shown, that the K-method compensates for many environmental and system parameters affecting the measurement, and produces a contrast value according to the definition of contrast. It was also found that backlighting is still the best method to use for display testing using vision technique. Backlighting produces less illumination than frontlighting, but with frontlighting display reflections occur that makes vision processing very complex.
