AbstractBackground: Osteoarthritis is common and many people suffer from osteoarthritis of the knee and hip joints. There are several underlying reasons why people develop osteoarthritis. Increasing age, obesity, heavy loads and adverse previous knee injuries are risk factors. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but early interventions are an important part of treatment to delay progression. Neuromuscular training with specific exercises are part of the treatment, along with patient education about osteoarthritis.Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the participants' experience of neuromuscular training and content of osteoarthritis school at a medical center in central Sweden.Method: The study has a qualitative design based on content analysis. Data collection was done through interviews with semi-structured questions. The study interviewed 17 people to obtain their perceptions of neuromuscular training and content of osteoarthritis school. Results: The analysis resulted in two categories and six subcategories. One category involves neuromuscular training and includes participants' experience and interpretation of neuromuscular training. Participants include described that they learned to be mentally present during the exercises and it felt specifically when the exercises performed slowly. The second category involves the participants' experience of supervised practice and content of osteoarthritis school. It concluded that it felt motivating and socially with group exercise and it was much appreciated that a physiotherapist was with and instructed throughout the training period. Conclusion: The study revealed that participants experienced neuromuscular training positive, it meant an awareness and brought a new mindset regarding training. It was appreciated that there was a physiotherapist-led training group, was rewarding to get information about osteoarthritis and to meet other people with the same kind of trouble. Keywords: Osteoarthritis School, physiotherapy, neuromuscular training.
