Abstract [en]
There are a variety of useful methods that can be used to create representations of urban space. Describing urban space is not entirely simple and can be based on many different aspects. Existing urban analysis are often based on either qualitative or quantitative measurements, but city planning is a complex task and therefore requires a combination of different measurements to get a more balanced result. The purpose of this thesis is to identify differences and similarities between what we are experiencing and the measurable in urban space by exploring the relationship between representations of urban space and the experience of urban space. More specifically, the focus of this study is geometric and topological representations of urban space and how urban space is experienced. The study is based on using three different methods; a geometrical and a topological study of urban space and a survey focusing on how urban space is perceived. It was started by a literature study. The topological study consists of an axial analysis and the length, width and height of urban space has been measured in the geometrical study. The relationship between the geometrical and topological values impact on the experienced values have been studied by correlation and regression analyzes. The width and height of urban space were found to have little or no relation to the studied experience values. The length of urban space showed relation to some of the studied experience values as the longer streets are perceived to be more vivid, more enjoyable and more beautiful. The local integration of urban space was also found to be related with these experience values, but not as strongly. The weak correlation between integration and the experience values safety and vividness arouses wonder if the result of the integration analysis truly reflects actual flows in Örnsköldsvik.
