Abstract [en]

In the future, the number of elderly people will increase, which also means an increased need for care givers. For older people to live at home independently for as long as possible could robotics be a complement to care in the home. The aim of the literature review was to describe needs and attitudes related to robot support in the home and how robotics can promote participation in daily activities for older people in ordinary housing. Data collection was conducted in scientific databases that were accessible at Luleå University Library. Eight articles were selected since they met the inclusion criteria. The articles were analyzed and resulted in four categories: Robot development to meet the needs of older people, Robotics to maintain independence for older people, Older people's experiences of using social aids robot and Older people's view of robotic assistance in the home. The results of the literature review showed that robots can support older people in the home with communication, social interaction, memory training and reminders to promote independence. The study shows that older people were largely open and positive for robot support at home. Robotics may in the future provide an innovative aid to increase the independence and encourage participation in daily activities for older people in their homes. Robotics is already used in occupational therapy, there needs to be more research in the area of robotics, activity and older people in ordinary housing before occupational therapists can use robots as an intervention to promote independence and participation in daily activities. Keywords: Occupational therapy, robotics, older people, ordinary housing
