Monitoring of the ATLAS Detector: development of a data acquisition system for histogram monitoring of the ATLAS detector in the large hadron collider at CERN

At the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, a new particle accelerator called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is under construction. ATLAS is one of the two largest detectors for the LHC and it is designed to detect up to one billion proton collisions per second, corresponding to a data volume of more than 40 million megabytes per second. The data produced in the ATLAS detector are transported by a multi- level Trigger and Data Acquisition (TDAQ) system, which discards uninteresting information and reduces the amount of data sent to permanent storage with a factor of the order of 10^7. In the TDAQ system histograms are produced for various purposes, both by purpose-built hardware and ordinary software applications. This thesis is devoted to the development of a system capable of retrieving histograms from the ATLAS TDAQ. In this report the research, collaboration and development performed to provide such a system are described. It was found that existing technology could be used as a foundation for the histogram distribution system, resulting in less and easy-to-maintain software and a robust distributed client-server architecture, which allows many simultaneous users. The system is provided on several platforms and allows histogram transportation between hardware with different byte ordering and floating point formats. The system, some example applications and the reference manual were added as a new software component of the ATLAS TDAQ Online Software system and are available to the ATLAS community for use and evaluation.
