Abstract [en]

Introduction: Children fear X-ray examinations because they are performed in an unknown environment; they fear that they will experience pain from the machines. Some examinations require children to lay still for over an hour in order to avoid errors. This places special demands on radiology nurses to understand the paediatric patients to reduce their discomfort and make investigations as smooth as possible. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out how radiology nurse can reduce children's fear of an X-ray. Method: This study is a literature review with an analysis of quantitative research in the research area children’s fear of x-ray examinations. Results: The methods that have proven to be most effective in alleviation of children’s’ fear prior to and during x-ray examinations are music, photo, and film and play exercises with children prior to and during the examination. Another effective method is to train children’s’ coping with fear by using specially designed mock x-ray machines to alleviate pain during the examination itself. Conclusion: Radiology nurses have at their disposal a host of different methods which lead to alleviation of apprehension prior to the x-ray examination which considerably lessen or totally void the need for sedation because the child has learned to cope with its fear of the situation at hand.
