Internationalization of SMEs
1999 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The business is getting global and especially small and medium sized software enterprises are internationalizing rapidly. This alongside the fact that software industry is relatively new makes the internationalization in this industry particularly interesting. This tesis aims to describe and, to some extent, explain this process. Three research questions were stated: Which are the motivations for the companies to internationalize their business, How do the companies select international markets, and Which market entry strategies companies use when going international? Focused interviews in multiple case studies were used to answer these questions. Collected data was analyzed in within-case and cross-case analyses. It was found that the proactive motivations, especially product and committed management, are the most important in the decision to internationalize a small or medium sized software company. Limited screening process was commonly used to select new markets and direct export was the most widely used market entry mode.
