Modelling in a virtual spacecraft design environment

Abstract [en]

Saab Ericsson Space is a supplier of command and data handling system for satellites and launchers. Data handling systems consist of several modules with processors and advanced ASIC’s for data processing, communication, fault tolerance and memory handling. There exists an increasing interest in modelling these systems to create a virtual satellite. The virtual satellite has models of all subsystems, while the external stimuli and space environment is generated in a simulator. This advanced simulation environment enables early system validation and early software development. To its full extent this approach would eliminate the need of an engineering qualification model. This thesis has investigated this trend and how it will influence Saab Ericsson Space. Focus has been on how customers are using subsystem models in their simulation facilities, the model requirements and how Saab Ericsson Space could meet the increasing demand of simulation models. The method has been to study data handling conferences, interviews with customers, study past and current satellite projects and finally a case study implementation to ease the understanding of the modelling requirements. It is clear that simulation based development will be an important part of future system engineering, where customers more and more will rely on simulation models for development, testing, integration and operations issues. Saab Ericsson Space, as a subsystem supplier, needs to strengthen its products by either providing much more detailed documentation about its systems or to offer compatible and portable simulation models of their hardware. The recommended roadmap is to provide models that are based on already existing technology and knowledge at Saab Ericsson Space.
