Abstract [en]

Volvo Aero (VAC) has for several years developed new manufacturing methods for different highly advanced components for aircraft engines. Today’s structures often consist of large casings, which only a few suppliers can manufacture which raise the prices. One idea to solve this is that the structure is build up from sectors, made from sheet metals welded together. Practical factors during the welding processes of these sheet metals makes normal fillet welding impossible. Instead the welding takes place from outside the top-sheet using multi pass welding. This new welding technique introduces new discontinuities to the weld and several welding experiments are ongoing at VAC to investigate how the number of passes and their orientation etc. are affecting the weld quality. This master’s thesis focuses on the new geometrical discontinuities that are introduced when welding with this new process. An investigation of welded joints has been performed to understand what kind of new deviations that are introduced to the weld bead and how these are affected by changes in welding parameters. Several analyses of the new geometrical deviations resulted in new requirements to prevent the stresses in these new welds to exceed the one allowed in the weld standard used today.
