Abstract [en]
When diagnosing carotid artery stenosis different type of preferences are found depending on which hospital is being looked at. The goal of this study is to examine which one of the two modalities, MRI and CT, had the most scientific support for diagnosing carotid artery stenosis. The purpose of the study was to use an evidence based, systematic literature review to examine which of the two modalities is the optimal one for the diagnosis. The literature study was based on a question that was formulated during the pre-review of relevant articles; Which modality is the most reliable when diagnosing carotid artery stenosis? A literature search was performed and 11 articles were found to fit the issue. The result of the study was that contrast enhanced magnetic resonance tomography was the modality that generated the least fewest errors in diagnoses. With patients who have contraindications for contrast, magnetic resonance tomography without the use of contrast proves to be as good as computed tomography.
