Automatic detection of surface defects
2007 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

A commonly occurring problem when manufacturing panels in certain polymeric composites is the occurrence of pores in the surface. At SICOMP AB there is a project with the aim of developing a system that can detect these pores that are not necessarily visible to the human eye. This thesis presents a method for processing the measurement data in order to have the system produce high level results such as position and size of detected pores. The measurement method is based on observing how a liquid applied to the surface evaporates. It uses the fact that complete evaporation will take longer time in the pores than elsewhere since liquid will have gathered there. The proposed processing method continuously determines what areas were recently wet. In data from these areas the pores will be detectable and therefore it is saved for post processing. For the post processing a simple linear filter and thresholding was found to be sufficient. The method has been implemented in a prototype system where it has proved to work well.
