Abstract [en]
The aim of this study is to investigate how students at adult school in Swedish for immigrants experience choral singing as a tool to improve their Swedish pronunciation. The questions I ask are:• How does the students describe choral singing as a teaching method to develop their Swedish language and Swedish pronunciation?• How does the students describe choral singing effects on their self-esteem?• How does the students describe the importance of a non-second language accent/pronunciation?The study is based on a choir project where immigrant students, during six occasions, practiced Swedish songs for a Lucia performance to be held at the school. The students has through qualitative focus group interviews, discussed how they perceive their own learning, the importance of good pronunciation and how choir singing could be a tool for learning and strengthening for their self-esteem. The empirical material has been treated with a color coding scheme in which key words pronunciations, language learning and self-esteem are in focus. It also describes the education Swedish for immigrants' work and goals, previous studies on language and second language learning and societal attitudes towards second language accent. The study is analyzed based on socio-cultural and hermeneutical theory. The results of the study shows that students experience choral singing as a good method to practice the Swedish pronunciation. They also describe the method as positive when it comes to bond with peers and develop social contacts. The students emphasize the importance of good pronunciation for understanding and integration in society.
