Development of poles as a backcountry shelter accessory

Abstract [en]

This master thesis is a result of a development project at Luleå University of Technology together with Hilleberg the tentmaker AB. The project aimed to develop telescopic hiking/skiing poles as a shelter accessory that contributes to an increased value of Hilleberg’s range of products. Reviews of Hilleberg’s current products, benchmarking of hiking and skiing poles and other essential applications were implemented. User interviewes, pole tests and personas were used to define the target group and to get a valid requirement specification. The most important needs of the product were used in the concept generation phase to make sure the right product was developed for the right purpose. Experimental prototyping, sketching and a brainstorming session generated a wide range of ideas. The ideas was completed and arranged into three approaches: development of a shelter application, optimization of poles for hiking and skiing purposes as well as to develop an additional value of the poles. A decision was made together with Hilleberg to develope a concept that connects two poles to build an extra tall pole as an accessory to the Altai tent. An additional decision was also made to optimize a pair of poles. Further concept generation resulted in concepts and principles of how this could be done. The principles of the pole connector was found valuable for Hilleberg and a decision was made to only develop that concept as close as possible to production and cancel the optimization. During the construction phase sketching, hands-on prototyping and the use of paper models resulted in a well functioning component. A CAD- model was established and a lookes-like model was generated in a free form tool. Finally function and expression of the prototype was evaluated. The final product concept satisfies the identified needs very well. The pole connector connects two poles to create one extra tall pole or creates an angle between two poles that can be used as a shelter accessory. The project team recommends Hilleberg to proceed with the pole connector that is innovative and flexible. The product will give a great foundation to create new shelter solutions to match the increased popularity in the segment ultra light backpacking.
