Abstract [en]
Previous research shows that ambulance nurses experience anxiety and uncertainty when it comes to caring for children in the prehospital care. This can create stress, and is based on a sense of lack of knowledge and continuous training. In addition, parents may feel anxious and helpless. This requires more of the ambulance nurse. There are few studies that describe how experienced emergency nurses with specialist education experience caring for acutely ill children in the prehospital care. The aim was to describe experienced specialistambulance nurses' experiences of prehospital care of acutely ill children. A qualitative approach was chosen, with individual semi-structured interviews. Eight specialist ambulance nurses participated in the study and the interviews were analyzed using qualitative thematic content analysis. The analysis resulted in one theme: "To care for children requires extensive expertise," and six categories: "To be more prepared and adapt the care", "to feel safe", "to feel stress and anxiety", "to care for the whole family", "to be emotionally influenced" and "to lack continued learning and development". Participants described that they have developed a sense of calm and security in caring for children, but they could still be stressful and emotional. They described that they made an effort to do a little extra, and adapt examinations and treatments when they nursed children. To care for children also meant to care for parents and siblings. Finally, it emerged that there were requests for continued learning. To nurse children is emotional and requires both knowledge and experience. Despite many years of experiencethat has given greater security, experienced ambulance nurses feel increased stress when caring for children. Therefore there is a need for continuous training and education in the care of acutely ill children in the prehospital care.
