Pb-free Glasses for Passivation of Varistors

Abstract [en]

This project will focus on the passivation of varistors using lead-free glass. To date, the glass used contains PbO in order to lower the melting temperature of the glass. Pb is still allowed for use in electrotechnology products but concerning environmental aspects Pb is a hazardous material and is not desired.This project focus on characterising three different lead-free glass-powders and determine properties such as particle size, dispersion behaviour in slurry, melting behaviour of the glass, and finally the change in electrical properties during the glazing step. All of these characteristics will be compared to the currently used glass types. The glass-powders used in this study contains Bi2O3 to lower the melting point of the glass.Three different Pb-free powders were studied in this project, and they were compared to the material used today.Throughout the tests performed it was found that all powder investigated was suitable candidates to replace the current material. However the melting temperature needed to be higher in order to achieve a desired glass quality. The electrical characteristics were not affected as much which makes these glass-powders more interesting as candidates for replacing the current powder.
