Evaluation of FLIC, a fluid dynamic incinerator code

Abstract [en]

The combustion of biomass in a grate furnace is very complicated and difficult to monitor. Due to the extreme conditions in the fuel bed in a combustion facility it is hard to measure different variables, which describes the combustion process. A mathematical model of the fuel bed conditions may provide data that can be used for physical modeling and further simulations of variables in the gas phase above the fuel bed. In order to achieve more reliable data for powerful simulations of the gas phase in a grate furnace and proper data for physical models, the performance of a fluid dynamic incinerator code, FLIC, has been evaluated. The results from calculations has been compared to a reference furnace, Stora Enso’s bark furnace P7 at Gruvön. The program does fulfil the demands on char gasification extent and the other data of the reference furnace. The input data that have a major influence of the combustion are inlet bulk density, residence time, reaction rate values and the pore size to particle diameter. The output data from the program may be used as initial data for simulations with computational fluid dynamics programs , CFD, and reference data for physical modeling. However, the program is unstable and thereby not very user friendly. The time for a normal simulation is long for this kind of equation solution procedure. Suggestions for further work are evaluations of different reference furnaces with different kinds of fuels.
