Systems for Track & Trace: a solution for TransFargo in Malmö

Abstract [en]

TransFargo is a private independent company, unattached to any other group in the freight and transport industry. They are active in two transport sectors, forwarding and logistics. One of their business-partners, Hellmann in Germany, has requested a Track & Trace, T&T, solution. Hellmann wants to be able to trace different events on their goods when TransFargo are transporting them in Sweden. The events are: “Pick-up”, “Arrival Terminal”, “Loaded Terminal” and “Information On Delivery, IOD”. The purpose of this thesis is to present a solution that can trace these events on a consignment- and package-level with the solution adapted to TransFargos’ business operations. The problem was approached using the systems approach with two disciplines involved: Logistics and Telecom- technology. This thesis has been carried through as a case study with almost entirely qualitative data, which is in concurrence with the systems approach. An empirical study was performed to map the company structure. This study was analyzed and three distinct user groups were determined: Terminals, Local distribution and Long-distance distribution. The analysis also shows that putting the user in focus is most important and with this in mind the solutions are presented for each user group. During the writing of this thesis an idea of using a WAP-portal to solve the problem for long-distance distribution was developed. The WAP-portal is a part of the final solutions. The result presents three different solutions for the different user-groups but the purpose of adapting the solution to TransFargos’ business operations is not fully achieved. The result shows that doing this will require some important decisions that have to be made by TransFargo. The path to follow in order to achieve a successful T&T solution is presented in the recommendations given to TransFargo.
