Abstract [en]

As diagnose criteria changes due to increasing knowledge more people with autism spectrum disorders are detected. One of these diagnoses is Asperger Syndrome [AS]. Living with AS could cause difficulties within several areas. Work is one of the purposeful activities important to man in order to experience well-being and satisfaction with life. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences individuals with AS have of work, out of the following concepts, important within occupational therapy: volition, habituation and performance capacity. Six autobiographies were chosen for a literature based study, and collected data were analyzed based on a qualitative content analysis. The chosen books were published in 1996-2011. All of the biography authors are of Swedish origin, of working age and with a diagnosis of AS. The analysis resulted in three categories: structure supports habituation, sense of control affects volition, and interpersonal interaction affects performance capacity. Overall, the study shows the importance of structure, routines and clear communication to these individuals, to create the security that enables them to execute their work in a satisfying way. This study can contribute with knowledge and understanding of the difficulties individuals with AS can experience in work. With assistance and support from an occupational therapist their life could be easier. The costs for support activity pays off in increased productivity, increased taxes, and decreased costs for social well fare and sickness benefit.
