Social awareness in the works of Arthur Miller
2006 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This C-essay deals with how social forces are depicted, and how the characters act under the influence of these forces, in three of Arthur Miller's plays: Death of a Salesman: The Crucible and All my Sons. The essay mirrors and explains Miller's views on society and how he wants people to act in order to maintain a balance in the personal and social sphere. Arthur Miller has often been accused of promoting communist ideals in his plays, this is also investigated in the essay in order to establish if Miller was in fact giving expression to socialist opinions or not. The essay reaches the conclusion that Miller feels that the individual is obliged to take responsibility on different levels in order to keep a balance in his or her life and society.
