UWE–3 Communication and Operation Capabilities: Design, Development and Verification

Abstract [en]

The University of Wuerzburg is currently working on the third Generation of UWE satellite. Some of the features will be: an enhanced Attitude Determination System (ADC) and newly designed Attitude Control System (ACS). With raising number of hardware and software components a need for advanced communication capabilities arises. The aim of this thesis is to elaborate an advanced communi- cation and data exchange routines - both on the UWE-3 OBDH (On Board Data Handling) board and ground station UWE-X software environment.In order to ensure the correctness of the OBDH software it is of particular inter- est to have the ability for uploading the updated (or extended) software version. Since the UWE↔GS radio link has a limited data rate, it is necessary to split large files into smaller parts and transmit them separately (both for downlink and up- link). Optionally, some scripting abilities are desirable to allow task (experiment) creation without re-uploading the whole ODBC software.Due to the limit of communication duration, it is necessary to store the sensor data during the flight in the internal data base, so it can be transmitted later. Therefore the design of an appropriate data base structure must also be designed within the frame of this thesis. Moreover, during every communication event it is of peculiar interest to receive the status of all subsystems as fast as possible. Thus a state system will be designed to save the current state of all subsystems.Another important part of the thesis is the continuous testing. Especially the ability of software upload over air should be in use as soon as possible in the development phase of UWE-3 satellite. It ensures a high degree of software ro- bustness and would allow long-term tests of UWE-3 inside a test chamber - since the software update could be done without disassembling the test configuration.
