Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis was carried out at the “Konzern Produktions Planung” (co-operate production planing) at Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, Germany. The purpose with the work was to examine different possibilities to provide technical and administrative information to the production worker using augmented reality technology, typically a “head mounted display”. The information provided should help improve the performance of the users on the shopfloor. Using augmented reality technology the manufacturing times and number of failures/mistakes should be lowered. To find the best form/presentation form to be seen in the Head Mounted Display, different information visualisation forms were generated, tested and analysed in a laboratory environment. The results from these tests are also verified in a production like setting. It should be noted that this technology is still in its infancy and has to be further developed before it can be implemented it in a real manufacturing environment. The results indicate that there is significant potential to support the manufacturing workers in a selection process using augmented reality. It has been found that the technology offers the greatest benefits, improvements with a higher complexity of the task. It can be expected that the work times are lowered and the hit rates are improved with the implementation of augmented reality technology.
