Konverteringsstrategi och utvärdering av Live Shape i CATIA V6 som verktyg för direkteditering av konverterad geometri
2013 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

Saab Dynamics (SBD) are using CATIA for new development-projects but still have geometry existing in I-deas, which were created before the decision to move to the CATIA-platform. Since converting geometry always results in a loss of data, the conversion from I-deas to CATIA has been considered to be too expensive, which is why SBD still are dependent on a multiCAD-environment. The analyses in this Thesis work has been made in Live Shape; a tool for direct modelling in CATIA V6. The purpose was to examine the maturity of the tool and how SBD can use direct modelling to edit converted data. An equivalent tool in NX; Synchronous Technology has been used as a reference.Four different geometry-conversion methods (Elysium Feature, JT, STEP and Elysium B-rep) for transferring geometry from one CAD-system to another has been tested to find out how they affect the ability to edit geometry in Live Shape. In this case, the sending system was I-deas and the receiving system CATIA V6, the focus was laid onto optimizing the conversion-process.The main difference between the methods was their ability to transfer different kinds of data. The alternative which best agreed with SBD’s demands was Elysium Feature set at minimum B-rep cleaning. The Elysium Translator gives the user the opportunity to transfer a part’s history-tree, which sometimes fails to the result of B-rep fallback being used (the part is transferred without history). This method gave the least amount of problems in Live Shape and could transfer more useful data (material, meta-data amongst others) than STEP and JT.Live Shape is a tool offering an intuitive and fast workflow. Its short time on the market shows in instability and irregularity when editing geometry, especially when compared to Synchronous Technology. However; the result from this thesis shows that Live Shape, despite some faults, should be suitable for the non-complex editing of geometry that SBD expects to be made.Below is a proposed process for converting and editing geometry in Live Shape.1. Organize and update data in sending system before conversion (not described in report)2. Convert data, supposedly with one of the methods described in this report.3. Load geometry to CATIA V6 using a controlled process (not described in this thesis).4. Control that meta-data, materials and other important data has been transferred correctly.5. Depending on which type of edit that is to be made to the geometry, decide whether to modify or re-model the part. When having converted data without history; convert geometry to be edited into a Live Shape – part.6. Modify the converted data with Live Shape7. Restore lost information (drawings e.g.)8. Save, Check in and publicize updated data using SBD-methodology (not described in report)
