Creation of a Guidebook of Material Solutions Considering the Condition of Use

Abstract [en]

This master thesis was performed at the company FLOWSERVE located in Arnage during the period from February to August 2015. This thesis takes place in a bigger project at FLOWSERVE to formalize the knowledge and estimate the wear rate of different constitutive components and products manufactured by FLOWSERVE. In order to clearly identify the framework and the limits of the project, a theoretical background and a literature survey were performed. Different possible solutions for some cases were estimated with regard to their theoretical reliability and longevity using internal data and chemistry knowledge. For sensible topics, deeper investigations were carried out. Finally, additional investigations about wear and galling where specifications were stated by a customer were performed.The project is presented in five parts. The first part presents the company and the background of the project, the second section is an introduction and literature review of degradation mechanisms that can occur in centrifugal pumps. Consequently, in the third part is a ranking of the different medium encountered according to their corrosivity and their impact on the pump performance done and solutions are indicated for each medium. The fourth part summarizes a specific study for geothermal water application. Then the fifth part is devoted to a specific case in which the requirements from a customer to quantify wear and galling at the rotor-stator interface between a plain journal bearing and the rotating shaft are treated.The material selection process showed that iron base alloys can be suitable for most of the applications encountered by the company and, even if the term "iron based alloys" can refer equally to cast iron as for duplex austenitic-ferritic stainless steel, the families of mediums find global solutions and the variation of parameters such as concentration and temperature can be handled by adjusting the alloy content of the steel. This report concerns the theoretical research of the project. It was concluded that the identified solutions must be tested in real conditions or in laboratory and the degradation must be quantified to compare with the theoretical data compiled in the research work. Consequently to these measurements, the material selection may be modified according to new findings by science in progress.It has not been possible to finalize the tribology tests before the end of the master thesis, this is why no final conclusions about these final tribological tests have been drawn.
