ABSTRACTBackground: The ambulance service is a complex area where the ambulance nurse is expected to be an expert from day one. Experience is what gives security and novices do not yet have this experience. Stress and insecurity of the unknown is not uncommon in ambulance care. Many of the mistakes occur when the novice nurse handles a situation of which she has little or no experience. Purpose: To describe the novice ambulance nurse's experience of handling situations of uncertainty. Method: A secondary analysis of thirteen semi-structured interviews. The interviews were analyzed with qualitative thematic content analysis. Result: An overarching theme was identified; striving for control over the situation, in various ways created by the ambulance nurse, conditions for control over the situation was made possible. The theme is presented with three categories in which ambulance nurses described an experience of faith in competence and ability, striving for preparedness for situations of uncertainty and a willingness to act in the healthcare-room. Conclusion: When the ambulance nurse feels that she has both inner and outer control of the situation, the handling of the situation becomes easier and the nursing care is positively affected. Through correct actions by the employer and a self-assurance in the professional role good conditions may be created to promote patient safety during the time the ambulance nurse is a novice.
