The focus of this thesis is to describe a process to streamline manufacturing at Trätrappor Norsjö AB with the explicit goal of a more efficient manufacturing process at reduced cost. Manufacturing processes can be measured by a top-level metric, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). This metric are calculated based on three underlying measure that provides insight into where efficiency gaps might occur in the manufacturing process. The underlying measures are, Availability, Performance, and Quality. Quality plays a major role in OEE, and interacts with both Performance and Availability.To investigate which aspects of substandard quality were introduced and/or found during packaging of manufactured goods, I developed a protocol to be used by personnel responsible for packaging goods when noting substandard quality. The protocol was introduced at three packaging areas at Trätrappor Norsjö AB, where steps were packaged, where stringers were packaged, and where railings where packaged. A total of 173 instances of substandard quality were noted during a three-week period. I analyzed the data from the study and found that all of the instances had a negative impact on the delivery schedule of manufactured goods. Studying the data in more detail, I found that incorrect use of fillers was responsible for the major part, 20.8%, of the identified quality problems. Blisters and droplets in the paint finish made up another 19.1% of the quality problems. In addition to developing a protocol to note and document quality problems, I also conducted a study to identify and document parameters that are important to control in order to achieve a process that delivers a preferred quality of finish for products at Trätrappor Norsjö AB. The study was based on interviews with experts in the finish process available on Trätrappor Norsjö AB. Data from the study show that it is important to control the UV radiation resistance of the paint, coat thickness, paint viscosity and paint-gun air pressure. In addition to this it is also important to control the climate, including temperature, humidity, and, air velocity in areas where products are finished and dried.
