Abstract [en]

This study is based on a quantitative method to show the attitudes towards drugs, the use of drugs and the drug consumption among young adults between the ages 16-26 of Norrbotten County. Since no previous study has been carried out in Norrbotten County in this age range, and other research shows that drug consumption is highest between the ages 16-26, therefore makes this span interesting to study this. This study focuses on attitudes towards drugs and the use of drugs and to give a better picture of the drug consumption in this age range. In order to answer the purpose four issues were formulated; How does the consumption of cannabis look among 16-26 year olds in Norrbotten County? How are the attitudes towards drugs and the use of drugs among 16-26 year olds in Norrbotten County? Is it possible to distinguish any differences between men and women? Is it possible, through Parker's normalization theory, to claim that there has been a normalization of drug use among 16-26 year olds? The data that were used to get information about the attitudes and consumption were used from existing material through questionnaires collected at secondary schools in the County of Norrbotten in the autumn of 2014 and through questionnaires collected at the University of Lulea during spring of 2014. Together the surveys reached 9859 people between the ages 16-26, and 7892 of them responded to the survey. This gave the study a response rate of 80,0 percent and a drop of 20,0 percent. The study showed that a large proportion of young adults between 16-26 years had some type of experience with cannabis. The largest proportion of the young adults in this study had neutral attitudes toward drugs and the second largest share had restrictive attitudes. The knowledge proved to be ordinary in the majority of the respondents and there were barely any differences in the proportions of the young adults with restrictive and liberal drug attitudes. The study also showed that there are differences in almost every aspect between boys and girls, where the former increasingly have used drugs and often have liberal attitudes. The results also showed which factors increase the odds of an individual to try cannabis; some of these were age, attitudes and whether or not the individual had friends who use cannabis.
