Energy efficiency of buildings is a much discussed topic due to residential and commercial buildings account for 35% of the total energy use in Sweden. With the new EU directive, Sweden will design a plan to achieve near-zero energy buildings by the year 2021. The definition of near-zero energy building is a building that has a very high energy performance and a very low amount of energy required should mainly be supplied in the form of renewable energy.Passive houses are a type of low-energy buildings that have a compact building construction that keeps a low U-value, using internal heat from appliances and people who reside in the building. This contributes to a low loss of energy and a low energy use, which approaches the goal of near-zero energy building. A detached single family home that meet the requirements for passive house set by the Sveriges Centrum för Nollenergihus in southern Sweden have been designed. Energy calculations have been carried out in PHPP (Passive House Planning Package 2007) which shows that the building meet the requirements.
