Sliding door concept for an Opel Zafira

Abstract [en]

Most sliding doors on today’s market relays on the same principle. They are based on a system with sliding rails, having one rail mounted outside onto the coach, which may cause interference in styling. They all contain a plain door trim with a fix or just partly opened windows. The aim of this thesis is to design a new type of sliding door mechanism, able to let the door be store a fully extruded door trim and a regular “up & down” window. The mechanism must be adaptable to an Opel Zafira and may not be visible from outside the car, i.e. now middle rail is allowed. The thesis is meant to be a recommendation to future students who will refer to it when prototyping a viable solution. The problem solving process was divided in two phases. In the first, primary phase were overall solutions generated to ensure adaptability to the Zafira in an early stage. The solutions found partially better than the rest were further developed in the secondary phase, the detail construction. A concept based on telescopic rails were found most suitable and was the one to be further developed. The concept constitutes of two curved telescopic rails at the bottom and at the top of the door. A rod connects the rails with each other and together they produce a supporting frame, which surrounds the door. The frame in turn, is connected to the car structure at the original hinges. In the first part of the opening procedure the door opens normally, it rotates at the hinges. From this slightly open position the door is able to translate backwards along the rails. It was discovered hard to fulfil all the demands listed for the project. The elaborated concept proposal is a compromise between the requirements.
